At Safer Foundation, we’ve had a tremendous impact on the lives of our clients over the past 50 years, and as we have grown over the decades, so has our ability to serve people. One of the most innovative and effective ways we make a difference is through suborganizations or subsidiaries called social enterprises.

Howard Tatar has been a Chicagoan his entire life. After graduating law school, he headed up trust departments for major banks like Bank of America. He had long been interested in giving back to his community, but it wasn't until he left his job and started his own banking company, which he still runs, that he finally had the time to commit. And when that time came, he knew just where to turn.

For employers who need workers, an excellent way to shore up team resources while helping others with a hand up is through a workforce development partnership. Hiring people with records—justice-involved people—is a way to gain skilled, highly motivated team members who will be grateful contributors to your business.

Safer Foundation Quad Cities was recognized this past weekend as the 2022 recipient of Rock Island County NAACP’s Image award for Law Enforcement. This year’s Freedom Fund and Image Awards & Youth Academic Scholarship Banquet was held to celebrate individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to the communities of Rock Island County.

In celebration of Safer Foundation’s 50^th anniversary, we’re sharing some of the incredible stories and successes our clients have achieved throughout our five decades of empowering formerly incarcerated individuals and reducing recidivism.

Every step we take is focused on helping our clients successfully reenter society. This month, we offer a closer look at how Safer Foundation has worked to reduce the statutory and perceptual barriers associated with incarceration and encourage success among formerly incarcerated individuals through the establishment of public policy. By working closely with government entities, employers and employer associations, Safer Foundation helps create sound policies and business practices that support the full participation in society by individuals with arrest or conviction records.

The road to a better future. It’s a long journey, and one that our organization has helped countless along. Today, we annually support over 5,000 men, women, and youth in attaining gainful employment. Our efforts go beyond the individual level to create a lasting positive impact on families and communities at large. But we didn’t get here overnight.
