Safer Foundation - Jerry Butler

Jerry Butler, Vice President, Community Corrections

"In my more 45 years of experience in the corrections/criminal justice field, I have seen no organization as committed to this specific segment of our society. The challenges faced by individuals with a criminal history is significant, and Safer Foundation has been providing support for this population in excess of four decades."

Jerry Butler joined Safer Foundation as the Vice President, Community Corrections in 2001, bringing with him a vast knowledge of and extensive management experience in the Illinois correctional system.

Jerry Butler worked for the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) for 31 years, holding a variety of administrative/leadership positions before retiring in 2000. At the time he was the Superintendent of the Illinois Youth Center in St. Charles, IL. Prior to that appointment Jerry was the IDOC’s Administrator of Employee Services, responsible for the agency’s Human Resources Department. In that capacity, he was the chief spokesperson in all matters involving labor relations and personnel.

Jerry was elected on two occasions to serve as the President, Illinois Correctional Association (ICA). During his leadership, membership increased dramatically and ICA was awarded the American Correctional Associations Blanch LaDue Award in recognition of this growth. In 2006, Jerry was selected to serve on the Governors Transition Team for the creation of the new Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice.

He currently serves on two American Correctional Association Committees: Community Corrections and Workforce/Human Resources and is on the Advisory Board of the Department of Juvenile Justice. In addition, he serves as a Board Member of the International Community Corrections Association, based in Washington, D.C. and in 2015, was appointed to the Governor’s Commission on Criminal Justice & Sentencing Reform in the State of Illinois.

In his home town of Aurora, Illinois, Jerry serves on the Board of two youth-focused social service programs.

Mr. Butler has an undergraduate degree in Criminal Justice and advanced courses from George Williams College in Administration and Organizational Behavior.
