Safer Foundation - Harry Alston

Harry Alston, Jr., Ph.D., VP Strategic Planning & Development

"For me, social and economic justice go hand-in-hand. We have to continue to press forward on these issues if we want to live up to the promise of the American Dream. A dream that is out of reach for so many people in our society today."

During a career that has spanned more than 25 years, Harry has established a track record for creating and implementing innovative programs and initiatives that increase business capacity, develop organizational infrastructures and strengthen human resource capability.

Harry came to Safer in 2011 as Associate Vice President of Model Development and in 2016 was named Vice President of Strategic Planning & Development. He also has held the positions of Strategic Development Officer and Senior Program Officer. His expertise in project management, process improvement and capacity building in community-based organizations is key to helping Safer Foundation achieve its strategic objectives.

Harry's passion for social justice issues and equitable opportunities for all was nurtured from childhood and continues to drive his success in providing workforce development and personal empowerment solutions that address the challenges of mass incarceration.

Prior to Safer, Harry was an assistant professor at Livingstone College in North Carolina. He has also taught at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte; Winthrop University in South Carolina; Indiana University Northwest; and Roosevelt University in Chicago.
